Cheap Car Hire in Paphos: What to Look For
A cheap car hire is only cheap if the price you see is the price you pay. Plenty of offers look low until you add the extras, the excess, the fuel and the fees. This guide shows where the money goes in a Paphos rental, which of our cars cost the least, worked examples by rental length, and the choices that lower the bill most, with the trade-offs stated plainly. CHMI Rentals has served Paphos for over 23 years from Tombs of the Kings Avenue.
What Sets the Price
- Vehicle class. Small hatchbacks have the lowest daily rate. Larger cars such as the Nissan X-Trail cost more.
- Season. Our prices are the same all year. July and August are the busiest months, and popular cars such as the SUVs can be booked out days in advance, so book early.
- Length of rental. Weekly and monthly bookings bring the per-day price down compared with a three day rental. A three day rental at a daily rate can cost more overall than a seven day booking at the weekly rate.
- Kilometres. On our rentals, mileage is unlimited, so the distance you drive does not change the rental price. See our unlimited mileage guide.
Our Lowest-Cost Cars
For daily and weekly rates, choose your dates on the fleet page, because they depend on the season. For stays of a month or more, these are the monthly rental prices for our compact automatics. All are 2020 models with five seats, air conditioning, a radio and a USB port.
| Car | Monthly rental | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan Note | €450 | The lowest monthly figure, with extra legroom and cargo space |
| Suzuki Swift | €540 | Drivers who want an agile car with Bluetooth |
| Honda Fit | €650 | Comfort and versatile seating |
| Toyota Vitz | €650 | A small, easy-to-park city car |
If you need more space, a larger car costs more, and that is fine when it is the right size. Our SUV rental has the Nissan X-Trail, and our family car hire guide helps you choose. For a group of five or more, one larger car is often simpler than splitting across two smaller ones.
Worked Example: What the Nissan Note Costs Over Time
This table uses the Nissan Note, our lowest-cost car, and compares renting it by the month with leasing it. All figures come from our current price list.
| How long | Renting by the month | Leasing | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | €1,350 | €1,230 (3 to 6 month lease, €410 a month) | €120 less |
| 6 months | €2,700 | €2,460 (3 to 6 month lease, €410 a month) | €240 less |
| 12 months | €5,400 | €4,560 (6 to 12 month lease, €380 a month) | €840 less |
| 36 months | €16,200 | €10,800 (36 month lease, €300 a month) | €5,400 less |
A lease is a fixed-term agreement, so it only saves money if you keep the car for the whole term, and it involves a basic credit eligibility check, which a rental does not. If your plans might change, the monthly rental is the safer choice. See car leasing and our short-term car lease guide.
Ways to Lower the Bill
- Choose the smallest car that fits your group. A compact costs less than an SUV, and it is easier to park.
- Rent for longer. A monthly rental costs far less per day than a short one. See our long-term rental page, which covers servicing, road tax and a replacement car when one is available in the monthly plans.
- Consider a lease. From three months, a lease is lower than the monthly rental, as the table above shows.
- Book early for July and August. Prices do not change, but the cheapest cars go first.
- Use the free delivery. When you rent with us, we take you to your hotel, villa or home free of charge in Paphos town, at Paphos Airport and in Chloraka, Kissonerga, Peyia, Coral Bay, Tala, Empa and Mesa Chorio, so you do not pay for taxis. From Larnaca, around 134 km away, the price is agreed with the shop; see the Larnaca to Paphos page. Please book 24 hours before.
- Book direct. Comparison sites can show a lower headline price that excludes fees a direct booking already covers. Booking with us means delivery, insurance level and deposit terms are confirmed up front.
- Return the car on time and with the same fuel level. Our terms charge an hourly fee for late returns, and petrol is non-refundable.
Costs Outside the Rental Price
Even the cheapest rental has costs you pay separately, and it is worth planning for them.
- Fuel. It is not included. Return the car with the same fuel level you received, and remember that petrol is non-refundable. Fill up before you start a long drive, because petrol stations can be spaced out.
- Parking. In Kato Paphos and the old town, look for marked bays or car parks. Unmarked kerbs often mean a fine, and parking near the harbour fills up on summer evenings.
- Fines. The renter pays all traffic fines, and speed cameras issue them automatically.
- Late return. An hourly delay fee applies, as set out in your contract.
- Excess. If the car is damaged or stolen, the renter is responsible, subject to the excess limits in the agreement.
Where a Cheap Price Can Cost More
A low headline rate can hide costs that arrive later. Before you compare, ask each company about the insurance excess, whether a second driver is included, the deposit, whether delivery to your accommodation is charged, and what a late return costs. Every rental here has third-party insurance, and under our terms the renter is responsible for damage and theft, subject to the excess limits in the agreement. A small saving on the daily rate is not worth a large excess. Our no hidden fees page lists every charge and obligation in our terms, so you can compare like with like.
Do You Need a Car for the Whole Trip?
The cheapest car is sometimes no car for part of the trip. In Kato Paphos, the harbour, the castle, the promenade and most restaurants can be reached on foot. A car makes sense for Coral Bay and the beaches north, Petra tou Romiou and the south coast, and Polis and Latchi. A common approach is to enjoy the first few days on foot, then rent for the days you want to explore, and we can deliver the car to your hotel the morning you need it. For a stay of a week or more, or if you want to see beyond your resort, a car usually pays for itself, because taxi fares add up fast.
