SUV Rental in Paphos: What You Get and What to Know First
Most people searching for an SUV rental in Paphos want the same three things: more space than a hatchback, a higher and more comfortable driving position, and confidence on the hilly roads that lead out of town. A well-chosen SUV delivers all three. What it does not do is turn a rental into an off-road vehicle, and we would rather say that plainly now than let you find out at the counter. This guide explains what our SUV and crossover fleet is good for, how to pick the right size, and how to plan a week of driving around the Paphos district.
CHMI Rentals has been renting cars in Paphos for over 23 years from our office on Tombs of the Kings Avenue, so the advice below comes from watching what visitors and residents do with their cars, not from a brochure.
Why Choose an SUV or Crossover in Paphos?
Paphos is spread out. The old town, the harbour, the Tombs of the Kings, Coral Bay, the villages behind Peyia and the coastal road towards Petra tou Romiou are all separate stops, and you will spend real time in the car. That is where an SUV earns its keep.
- Space for people and luggage. A family of four with two large suitcases, beach bags and a cool box fits far more comfortably in a crossover than in a compact. The boot on models such as the Nissan X-Trail helps on airport transfer day.
- A higher seating position. You see further over traffic and roundabouts, which many drivers who are new to driving on the left find reassuring.
- Comfort on longer drives. Cross-island trips and mountain villages are easier when the seats, suspension and cabin are built for distance.
- Strong air conditioning. From June to September the cabin needs to cool quickly after the car has been parked in the sun. Larger vehicles generally cope better with this.
- Room for beach and hiking gear. Umbrellas, folding chairs, snorkel bags and walking boots all stay out of the passenger cabin.
SUV vs Compact: Choosing the Right Size
Bigger is not always better. A large vehicle costs more per day, uses more fuel and is harder to park in the narrow streets around Kato Paphos and the old harbour. Use this table as a starting point.
| Your trip | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 people, town and beach only | Compact automatic | Cheapest to run and easiest to park. See our full fleet. |
| Couple or small family, longer drives | SUV or crossover | Comfort, boot space and a relaxed driving position. |
| Family or group of up to 7 | SUV | The Nissan X-Trail has seven seats, with room for suitcases and beach gear. |
| One month or more | Long-term rental | Lower monthly rate than paying by the day. |
The Honest Part: Paved Roads Only
Important: what our rental agreement allows
Under our terms of service, rental vehicles may not be driven off-road, on dirt tracks, in the Akamas region, or in the northern part of Cyprus. Damage in those areas is not covered and the renter is fully liable.
It is common for visitors to assume "SUV" means "go anywhere". In Cyprus rental terms it does not. Our SUVs are comfortable crossovers designed for tarmac, and that covers a great deal of the island: the whole Paphos coast, the motorway to Limassol, the road to Polis and Latchi, and the paved mountain roads up towards the Troodos villages.
The Akamas peninsula, with its famous dirt tracks to Lara Beach and the Blue Lagoon by road, is off limits in a rental car. If that is on your list, book a licensed jeep safari or a boat trip from Latchi instead. It is safer for you and it keeps your rental agreement intact.
A Week of Paved-Road Driving Around Paphos
Here is a realistic plan for a week with an SUV, using only paved roads. Distances are approximate, and we can adjust the route if you tell us where you are staying.
- Day 1: Settle in. Collect your car at Paphos Airport or at your hotel, stock up at a supermarket, and drive the short coast road into Kato Paphos for a harbour dinner.
- Day 2: Archaeology. The Paphos Archaeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings sit close together. Park once, walk both.
- Day 3: Coral Bay and Peyia. A short drive north gives you one of the island's best sandy beaches. See our Coral Bay delivery page if you are staying there.
- Day 4: The south coast. Head east along the coast towards Petra tou Romiou, the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, and continue to the wineries and villages above the coast.
- Day 5: Polis and Latchi. A longer drive north. Have lunch on the waterfront and take a boat trip from the harbour. Details on our Polis & Latchi page.
- Day 6: Mountain villages. Follow the paved roads up into the hills for cooler air, old stone villages and viewpoints. Take it slowly; the bends are tight.
- Day 7: Easy day and return. Pool, packing and a relaxed drop-off at the airport.
What Is Included and How Renting Works
- Payment: you can pay in cash or by credit card, so a credit card is not required. Read more on our no credit card rental page.
- Insurance: vehicles carry third-party insurance. The renter is responsible for damage or theft subject to the excess limits in the agreement, so read the terms before you sign.
- Passport deposit: as set out in our terms, renters leave their passport as security at hire. It is returned when the vehicle comes back in the agreed condition.
- Fuel: return the car with the same fuel level you received it with. Fuel already in the tank is not refundable.
- Delivery: we can deliver to hotels and villas in Paphos town, at Paphos Airport and in Chloraka, Kissonerga, Peyia, Coral Bay, Tala, Empa and Mesa Chorio.
- Cancellation: after the contract is signed, refunds are not given, so check your dates carefully before you confirm.
Driving in Cyprus: Practical Tips
- Traffic drives on the left, and steering wheels are on the right. Take the first few minutes in the car park to adjust.
- Roundabouts are frequent. Give way to traffic already on the roundabout and use your indicator when leaving.
- Speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour and are enforced. All traffic fines are the renter's responsibility.
- Seat belts are compulsory for everyone in the vehicle.
- Park in marked bays, keep the car locked, and never leave luggage visible. Lost or broken keys are the renter's responsibility.
- In summer, avoid leaving children or pets in a parked car, and use a windscreen sun shade.
