Car Hire With No Hidden Fees: What That Should Mean

No rental is free of obligations. What matters is whether you know about them in advance. A price with no hidden fees is one where every charge and responsibility is written down and shown before you confirm. This page lists everything our terms of service say, in plain language, so you can check it before you book. CHMI Rentals has served Paphos for over 23 years from Tombs of the Kings Avenue.

Every Charge and Obligation in Our Terms

ItemWhat applies
InsuranceThe vehicle has third-party insurance. In an accident, the owner is not responsible for the driver or passengers.
Damage and theftThe renter pays for damage to the vehicle and for theft, subject to the insurance excess limits in the agreement.
PassportLeft at handover as security. The owner may keep it until any damages or other expenses have been paid.
FuelReturn the car with the same fuel level you received. Petrol is non-refundable.
MileageUnlimited on rentals. The distance you drive does not change the rental price.
Minimum rental72 hours (3 days).
Late returnIf the car is not returned on the agreed date and time, an hourly delay fee applies, as set out in the contract.
Traffic finesThe renter pays all traffic fines.
Keys and lockingThe car must be locked when parked. Lost or broken keys are the renter's responsibility.
RefundsAfter the contract is signed, refunds cannot be given. If the car is returned early, a refund cannot be given.
Where you may driveNot in Northern Cyprus, the Akamas region, or off-road. Damage there voids cover and makes the renter fully liable.
Who may driveOnly the renter who signed the contract. Holders of a provisional licence may not carry passengers.
DeliveryFree for renters in Paphos town, at Paphos Airport and in Chloraka, Kissonerga, Peyia, Coral Bay, Tala, Empa and Mesa Chorio. Anywhere further out: call the shop, extra charge.
DepositA small refundable deposit: €500 for compact cars, €900 for the Nissan X-Trail, €1,200 for the Ford Transit van. Returned when the car comes back in the agreed condition.
LarnacaA transfer from Larnaca Airport, or dropping the car at Larnaca Airport, has a charge agreed with the shop in advance.
PaymentCash or credit card. Debit cards are not accepted.

Why Each Item Exists

Knowing the reason behind a rule makes it easier to plan around.

  • Third-party insurance covers other people and their property. It does not cover the renter's own injury or the car itself, which is why the excess in your agreement matters.
  • The passport deposit is security. If there is damage or an unpaid expense, the owner can keep the passport until it is settled, and you get it back with the car.
  • The fuel rule keeps things simple: same level out, same level back. Because petrol is non-refundable, returning the car fuller than you received it does not earn credit.
  • The late return fee is an hourly amount set out in your contract. Return on time, or call us as early as you can if you know you will be late.
  • The area restrictions exist because damage in Northern Cyprus, the Akamas region or off-road voids insurance.
  • The named-driver rule means only the person on the contract may drive. If two people plan to share the driving, discuss it with us at booking.

What to Ask Before You Sign

Two amounts depend on the car and are written in your rental agreement. Ask us for them before you confirm.

  • The insurance excess. How much you would pay if the car is damaged or stolen.
  • The late return fee. The hourly amount in your contract.
  • A second driver. Whether one can be added, and whether it costs extra.
  • Delivery outside the free area. The extra charge for anywhere outside our free delivery area.

Costs That Are Not Fees but Are Still Yours

  • Fuel for the kilometres you drive. Mileage is unlimited, but fuel is not included.
  • Parking. Look for marked bays or car parks, since unmarked kerbs often mean a fine.
  • Fines from speed cameras or parking.
  • Tolls. Cyprus motorways are generally free of tolls, but check current information before you travel.

Leasing and Long-Term Rentals Work Differently

If you are looking at a month or more, the terms are not the same as a short rental, so check them separately.

  • Monthly rentals include vehicle maintenance, road tax and a replacement car when one is available. Insurance options are described in your agreement. See long-term rental.
  • Leases include two free full services and one tyre change during the term, and the first 20,000 km. Extra distance is charged at 75 cents per km. A refundable deposit applies, and our calculator estimates the upfront payment as three monthly payments. See car leasing.

Why Booking Direct Helps

Third-party comparison sites can show a lower headline price that excludes fees a direct booking already includes, such as a mandatory insurance package, a booking fee or a currency conversion markup. When you book directly with us, delivery, insurance level and deposit terms are confirmed up front, and any change to your booking, such as an extension or a flight delay, goes straight to the people running your rental. Our Paphos car rental guide explains what to compare when you look at other companies.

What to Check at Handover

Two minutes at the start of the rental avoids disputes at the end.

  • Confirm the fuel level matches your rental agreement.
  • Photograph any existing scratches or dents before you leave the pickup area.
  • Check that the insurance excess and your documents are as agreed.
  • Adjust the seat, mirrors and steering position, and find the indicators and wipers.
  • Set your satnav before you move off, not while driving.

At Return

  • Return on the agreed date and time.
  • Return the fuel level you received.
  • Lock the car and hand over the keys.
  • Returns are during shop hours, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm.

Simple Ways to Avoid Extra Costs

  • Return the car on time, since late returns carry an hourly fee.
  • Return the fuel level you received, because petrol is non-refundable.
  • Stay within the permitted areas, so your cover is not voided.
  • Lock the car and keep the keys safe.
  • Choose your term carefully, since refunds are not given after signing.
