Moving Van Hire in Paphos
Moving house is hard enough without paying for a removal company to carry boxes you could carry yourself. If you have friends to help and a free weekend, hiring a van and doing the move yourself can be the simplest option. CHMI Rentals has a 2018 Ford Transit cargo van for hire in Paphos. This guide covers how to plan a move with it, how to load it, how long to book it for and what our terms mean on moving day. CHMI Rentals has served Paphos for over 23 years from Tombs of the Kings Avenue.
Is a Self-Drive Van Right for Your Move?
A van suits a move where you can do the lifting yourself.
- A flat or a small house with furniture you can carry between two or three people.
- A move within Paphos, or to a village nearby, where you can make more than one trip.
- Moving into or out of storage.
- Students and newcomers with a few pieces of furniture and a lot of boxes.
It is less suitable if you have heavy items such as a piano or a large safe, if nobody can help you lift, or if everything must move in a single trip. In those cases a removal company may be the better choice.
The Van
| Detail | Our Ford Transit |
|---|---|
| Model year | 2018 |
| Type | Cargo van |
| Gearbox | Manual |
| Fuel | Diesel |
| Seats | 3, including the driver |
| Useful for a move | Large cargo space, side sliding door, parking sensors |
The side sliding door helps when the van is parked against a kerb or in a narrow street and the rear doors are hard to open fully. The parking sensors help when you reverse up to a front door or a garage. For the exact load space, ask us before you book.
How Long to Book It For
The minimum rental is 72 hours (3 days). For most moves that is a comfortable fit: one day to collect and load, one day to drive and unload, and a spare day for the second trip, the last few items or a trip to the recycling point. Mileage is unlimited, so extra trips do not change the price. The table at the top of this page shows the 3, 7 and 21 day prices.
| Your move | A sensible booking |
|---|---|
| A flat within Paphos | 3 days |
| A house, with a few trips | 3 days, or a week if you are packing as you go |
| Moving in stages, or renovating first | 7 days or more |
| A business or a long project | See van leasing and long-term hire |
Under our terms, a refund cannot be given if the van is returned early, and late returns carry an hourly fee. If in doubt, book the extra day.
A Moving Day Plan
- Book the van at least 24 hours before if you want it delivered to your address. Delivery is free in Paphos town, at Paphos Airport and in Chloraka, Kissonerga, Peyia, Coral Bay, Tala, Empa and Mesa Chorio when you rent with us.
- Pack before the van arrives. Boxes labelled by room, furniture taken apart, drawers emptied.
- Check parking at both ends. Find where the van can stop safely and legally for loading. The renter pays any fines.
- Load the heaviest items first, low and against the bulkhead behind the seats, then furniture, then boxes.
- Fill the gaps with soft items such as bedding and cushions so nothing shifts.
- Drive steadily. A loaded van brakes and corners differently from a car.
- Unload in reverse order, and take the chance to put each box in the right room.
Packing and Loading Tips
- Use strong boxes of the same size. They stack better than bags.
- Keep boxes light enough for one person to lift. Books go in small boxes.
- Wrap furniture and mattresses in blankets or covers to protect them and the van.
- Tie down tall items such as wardrobes and fridges so they cannot tip.
- Keep a bag of essentials in the cab: keys, documents, chargers, water and a few tools.
- Do not overload the van. If you are unsure whether something is too heavy, ask us first.
Who Can Come Along
The Transit has three seats, including the driver, so two helpers can ride in the front. Nobody may travel in the cargo area. If more people are helping, they will need to travel separately. Only the renter who signed the contract may drive, and the holder of a provisional licence may not carry any passengers.
Driving a Manual Van for the First Time
The Transit is our only manual vehicle. If you usually drive an automatic, practise in an empty car park before you load it. Remember the van is taller and longer than a car, so watch for low balconies, branches and car park height barriers. Take hill starts in the villages carefully when the van is full.
What You Need
- A valid driving licence. A standard category B licence covers vans up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass; ask us to confirm for our van.
- Drivers must be over 21, or have at least 3 years of driving experience.
- Your passport or ID. The passport is left as security under our terms.
- Cash or a credit card in the renter's name. See renting without a credit card.
- A refundable deposit applies, and the amount depends on the vehicle category.
Insurance and Damage
Vehicles carry third-party insurance, and the renter is responsible for damage to the van or theft, subject to the excess limits in the agreement. Walk round the van at handover and photograph any existing marks, inside and out. Our car rental insurance guide explains the excess. Use paved roads only; off-road driving, the Akamas region and Northern Cyprus are not permitted.
Returning the Van
- Return it on the agreed date and time.
- Fill it with diesel to the same level you received.
- Empty the cargo area and remove any rubbish and packing material.
- Lock it and hand over the keys.
